What does it mean to truly give?

Or, perhaps, you are giving the chance, or maybe a second chance, at education and a better tomorrow?

Take Lisa, for example. A young, high school dropout who came to us for a second chance at education.

"I beat myself up for a long time over quitting," Lisa recalls. "I could've been the smart kid who graduated and went to college, but I gave up too early."

But Lisa didn't give up. At age 22, and in the midst of COVID, Lisa inquired about our virtual GED classes. She didn't have a computer or the internet at her house. She became discouraged and almost ready to give up on education again.

Literacy Council wouldn't allow Lisa to give up this time. We set her up with a loaner laptop, state-of-the-art software, free Wi-Fi, and tutoring. Lisa earned a GED in three months and entered college in August 2021. She is studying to be a chemical engineer.

Lisa’s story is all too familiar. An ambitious, determined student ready to change their life. But without the necessary resources, change is difficult at best. Imagine, that burning flame of hope abruptly extinguished from a simple lack of resources.
